TXU Energy Ratings & Reviews

Several companies rate electricity providers. ComparePower does not include customer reviews because they may be biased or easily manipulated in one way or another.

Often, a review is requested a few days after enrolling in a new energy plan, which is not enough time for the customer to become familiar with it.

The majority of customers who leave feedback do so to resolve a problem and use negative feedback to draw attention to it.

Positive reviews are often biased and motivated by incentives.

So what’s left?

Several long-standing customer review portals aim to remove bias. The Better Business Bureau and the Texas Public Utility Commission are two. As of publication, we also included updated Google ratings.

  • TXU Energy is an accredited business with an A+ BBB rating.
  • TXU Energy has over 3000+ reviews on Google with an average 4.6/5 star rating.
  • TXU Energy has a 4/5 rating on the Retail Electric Provider Complaint Scorecard published by the PUCT. (5/5 indicates the lowest complaint rate)

About TXU Energy

Founded in 1882 as the Texas Power & Light Company, TXU has been providing power to Texans for more than 130 years. The company was the first to bring electricity to Dallas-Fort Worth.

In those early years, their mission was to provide Texas residents and businesses with safe, reliable, affordable power. Texas deregulated its electricity market in 1999. For the first time, Texans had the power to choose their electricity provider.

Despite increased competition, TXU Energy saw it as an opportunity to expand. Their goal was to be a one-stop shop for all things energy for Texans, so they rebranded as “the new kind of energy company.”

In just a few years, TXU Energy became one of Texas’ largest competitive retail electric providers (REPs).

From its humble beginnings in 1882, TXU has evolved into one of the top electricity providers in Texas. You can rely on TXU to deliver innovative energy plans with a commitment to excellent customer service.

Why choose TXU Energy?

There is no doubt that TXU Energy has an outstanding reputation in Texas for its affordable electricity plans and excellent customer service.

Did you know? IVY is TXU’s award-winning self-service solution that makes it easy for customers quickly resolve issues.

With a voice-based virtual assistant, TXU Energy’s customer service team reduced the time it took customers to resolve problems, earning the Chartwell Gold Customer Service Award.

In addition, TXU offers recognizable energy plans such as Free Nights & Weekends and Solar Days.

With over 100 years of history in Texas, TXU has developed a relatively strong brand loyalty among its customers.

Before the deregulation of electricity in Texas, TXU was the only utility company supplying power to North Texas residents.

As the leading competitive retail electricity provider in Texas, TXU serves more Texans than any other company.

Just Energy Weekends Free

Just Energy Weekends Free offers up free electricity every weekend to help you save money.

If you’re reading this, you probably heard or saw an ad from Just Energy promoting this plan and are wondering if it is right for your home.

We broke down the details and have some tips to help you make an informed energy decision for your household.

Is Just Energy Weekends Free right for me?

The majority of “free-time” electricity plans simply don’t make sense because they cost more throughout the year than standard fixed-rate plans.

With energy prices on the rise this summer, Just Energy Weekends Free could save you money with a shift in your usage.

If you can save your laundry and dishes for the weekend, this plan is designed to save you money each week.

Important: Just Energy includes the free weekend usage discount in the advertised rate for this plan. You will NOT see an added discount on your electricity usage and MUST shift at least 35% of your usage to the night to get the advertised rate.

Free electricity could help lower your bills, but you need to shop with your home’s actual electricity usage to make sure Just Energy Weekends Free is a good choice for you.

Before buying into the advertising, input your electricity usage right here on ComparePower and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

Compare Just Energy Weekends Free pricing with fixed-rate plans so you know which plan will help you to save the most on electricity throughout the year.

The #1 most important thing to know is your home's energy usage.

This 2-minute video explains why shopping with your usage is so important👇

Quickly determine if Just Energy Weekends Free is right for your home with your kilowatt-hour usage👇🏽

Note: The easiest way to get 12 months of usage history is to log into your provider dashboard. You can also create an account with Smart Meter Texas, where you can get usage readings for your home in 15-minute intervals.

What is Just Energy Weekends Free?

Just Energy Weekends Free is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. These give you a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

With Weekends Free, Just Energy offers free electricity throughout the weekend. From Friday at 7 pm through Sunday at 11:59 pm, you won’t be charged by Just Energy for electricity.

You can use as much electricity as you want on the weekends, without worrying about a high electric bill at the end of the month.

How does Just Energy Weekends Free work?

Just Energy Weekends Free is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discount electricity during certain times throughout the year.

Weekends Free was created to give you free electricity each weekend and help you plan out your electricity usage during the week.

You can also upgrade your plan to 100% renewable energy with the JustGreen option.

Weekend discount

From 7 pm on Friday through 11:59 pm Sunday, Just Energy discounts your electricity.

Important: Just Energy includes the discount and the TDU charges in the advertised rate for this plan.

You must shift at least 35% of your usage to the free time period to get the advertised rate.

How much does Just Energy Weekends Free cost?

At the time of writing, Just Energy listed Weekends Free at 21.5 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Important: Just Energy includes the discounts in the advertised 21.5 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

No one uses 1000 kWh every month, and your usage will vary, which will affect the rate that you pay.

If you are considering signing up for Just Energy Weekends Free, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage to see if you will benefit from the discount.

Average Texan

Are you similar to the average Texan? According to eia.gov, the average Texan paid 12.8 cents per kWh for electricity in 2021.

With average usage of 1,132 kWh per month, the average Texas electricity bill would be right around $144.90 each month.

With the weather in Texas swinging each season, your usage and electricity bill can change as quickly as the weather.

Remember that these average numbers are taken from statewide data and that your usage could be drastically different based on the size and age of your home, your appliances, and your electricity usage habits.

Weekends Free

Compared to the Texas average, Just Energy Weekends Free is more expensive at 21.5 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

At 1,132 kWh of usage, your average monthly bill with Just Energy Weekends Free would be $250.10.

That’s almost 73% more than the average Texan paid last year for their electricity bills.

Your electricity bill could be even more expensive, especially if you can’t shift at least 35% of your electricity usage to the night.

Other fees

Alongside your energy charge, you’ll find a Base charge on your bill.

Just Energy collects a base charge of $4.95 regardless of the monthly electricity you use.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in, and Just Energy includes TDU charges in the energy charge listed on your Electricity Facts Label (EFL).

The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

As with most Just Energy plans, Weekends Free gives you the ability to upgrade to 100% renewable energy through the JustGreen program.

For $9.99 extra each month, Just Energy will purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset the electricity you use.

Just Energy Weekends Free also has an early termination fee of $175 if you end the plan before your contract expires.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, Just Energy lists additional fees for agents aiding with payments, disconnections, disconnection notices, insufficient funds, and late payments.

If you are concerned about any of these additional fees, you might consider a different electricity plan.

Are you getting free electricity?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting the weekends free with Just Energy Weekends Free.

Just Energy discounts your energy charge during the weekends and it includes the TDU charges in the energy charge listed on the EFL.

Just Energy also charges a base fee of $4.95 each month, so even if all your usage was during your free time you would still have to pay a small amount.

Regardless of the free weekends discount, you’ll still have a bill at the end of each month from Just Energy.

We broke down the details and have some tips to help you make an informed energy decision for your household.

Is Direct Energy Free Power Weekends right for me?

For most people, “free-time” electricity plans simply don’t make sense because they cost more throughout the year than standard fixed-rate plans.

With energy prices on the rise this summer, Direct Energy Free Power Weekends could end up saving you money with a shift in your usage.

If you can hold off until the weekend for things like laundry that consume a high amount of electricity, this plan is designed to save you money each week.

Important: Direct Energy includes the free weekend usage discount in the advertised rate for this plan. You will NOT see an added discount on your electricity usage and MUST shift at least 31% of your usage to the weekend to get the advertised rate.

Free electricity could help out on your bills, but you need to shop with your home’s actual electricity usage to make sure Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is a good choice for you.

Before buying into the advertising hype, input your electricity usage right here on ComparePower and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

Compare Direct Energy Free Power Weekends pricing with fixed-rate plans so you know which plan will help you to save the most on electricity throughout the year.

The #1 most important thing to know is your home's energy usage.

This 2-minute video explains why shopping with your usage is so important👇

Quickly determine if Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is right for your home with your kilowatt-hour usage👇🏽

Note: The easiest way to get 12 months of usage history is to log into your provider dashboard. You can also create an account with Smart Meter Texas, where you can get usage readings for your home in 15-minute intervals.

What is Direct Energy Free Power Weekends?

Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. With time-of-use plans, you get a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

With Free Power Weekends, Direct Energy offers free electricity on the weekends. From Friday at 6 pm through Sunday at 11:59 pm, the energy charge on your bill is discounted to zero.

You can use as much electricity as you want, without worrying about a high electric bill at the end of the month.

Direct Energy offers both a 12-month and 24-month contract, so you can get free electricity on the weekends for an extended period.

With the 12-month contract, Direct Energy also offers a discount on your energy charge if you sign up for autopay.

How does Direct Energy Free Power Weekends work?

Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discount electricity during certain times throughout the year.

Free Power Weekends was created to give you free electricity on the weekends to help you budget for electricity and cut down on your bills.

Weekend discount

From 6 pm on Friday through 11:59 pm on Sunday, Direct Energy discounts your electricity.

Important: This discount only applies to the energy charge on your bill.

On the weekends, Direct Energy cuts the energy charge of your bill to zero and the TDU charges are not passed on to you.

How much does Direct Energy Free Power Weekends cost?

At the time of writing, Direct Energy listed Free Power Weekends at 26.3 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

This price includes a 0.5 cent per kWh discount for signing up for autopay. If you do not sign up for autopay, Direct Energy advertises Free Power Weekends at 26.5 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage.

A base fee of $4.95 is charged each month regardless of the amount of electricity you use.

Important: Direct Energy includes the discounts in the advertised 26.3 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

No one uses 1000 kWh every month, and your usage will vary, which will affect the rate that you pay.

If you are considering signing up for Direct Energy Free Power Weekends, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage to see if you will benefit from the discount.

Free Power Weekends

Compared to the Texas average, Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is more expensive at 26.3 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

At 1,132 kWh of usage, your average monthly bill with Direct Energy Free Power Weekends would be $296.93.

That’s almost 105% more than the average Texan paid last year for their electricity bills.

Your electricity bill could be even more expensive, especially if you can’t shift at least 31% of your electricity usage to the weekend.

Other fees

Alongside your energy charge, you’ll find a Base and TDU delivery charge on your bill.

Direct Energy collects a base charge of $4.95 regardless of the monthly electricity you use.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in. The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

Direct Energy Free Power Weekends also has an early termination fee of $150 for the 12-month contract, and $295 for the 24-month contract.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, Direct Energy lists additional fees for late payments, returned payments, collection recovery, disconnect recovery, and any payments that are made with the help of customer support agents.

If you regularly need help with payments, you might consider a different electricity plan to avoid these fees.

Are you getting free electricity?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting the weekends free with Direct Energy Free Power Weekends.

Most providers offer up free electricity plans and pass on TDU charges to you for that time. It seems like you are getting that electricity for free, but you still end up paying for your usage during the free periods.

Compared to other free nights and weekends plans, Direct Energy’s Free Power Weekends stands out because the electricity is actually free on the weekends.

Direct Energy discounts your energy charge to zero during the weekends and it does not pass on TDU charges.

Direct Energy does charge a base fee of $4.95 each month, so even if all your usage was during your free time you would still have to pay a small amount.

Overall, Direct Energy Free Power Weekends is one of the few free nights and weekends plan that offers up truly free electricity usage during the weekends.

Reliant Truly Free Flex Days

Reliant Truly Free Flex Days are part of a trio plan that Reliant Energy launched to give you free electricity during different times of the week.

If you’re reading this, you probably heard or saw an ad from Reliant promoting these plans and are wondering if one of them is right for your home.

We did a deep dive into the details of Truly Free Flex Days and have some tips to help you make an informed energy decision for your household.

Is Reliant Energy Truly Free Flex Days right for me?

Most “free-time” electricity plans cost more throughout the year than standard fixed-rate plans, so we usually advise our readers against them.

With electricity prices at all-time highs this summer, Reliant Truly Free Flex Days could save you money if you can take advantage of the free time.

The interesting part of Reliant Truly Free Flex Days is that there is no set time when you are getting free electricity. Instead, Reliant gives you up to two days of free electricity each full week.

Important: Reliant includes the Free Flex Days usage discount in the advertised rate for this plan. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

Additionally, the number of free days you get throughout the month is dependent on the number of days in your billing cycle.

If you can’t shift most of your electricity usage to a few days during the week, Reliant Truly Free Flex Days could end up costing you more throughout the year than other plans.

Free electricity could be a game changer for you, but you need to shop with your home’s actual electricity usage to make sure you pick the right plan for your home.

Before buying into the advertising hype, input your electricity usage right here on ComparePower and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

Compare Reliant Truly Free Flex Days pricing with fixed-rate plans so you know which plan will help you to save the most on electricity throughout the year.

The #1 most important thing to know is your home's energy usage.

This 2-minute video explains why shopping with your usage is so important👇

What is Reliant Truly Free Flex Days?

Reliant Truly Free Flex Days is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. With time-of-use plans, you get a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

Reliant powers this plan with 100% renewable solar energy. The entirety of your usage is offset by renewable energy credits (RECs) that Reliant purchases.

With Truly Free Flex Days, Reliant offers free electricity on up to two of your highest usage days each week. Your energy charge for those days will be discounted to zero.

Important: The number of free flex days you get each month depends on the number of days in the billing cycle. Your billing cycle can change each month, so you are not guaranteed the maximum number of free flex days.

How do Reliant Truly Free Flex Days work?

Reliant Truly Free Flex Days is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discounted electricity during certain times throughout the year.

It was created to give you free electricity on your two highest usage days each week to keep your electricity bills in control throughout the year.

Truly Free Flex days are unique because there are no set times when you are getting free electricity, but the number of free flex days you get is dependent on the number of days in your billing cycle.

Here’s a breakdown of the number of free flex days you can receive:
1-3 billing days = 0 Free Flex Days
4-6 billing days = 1 Free Flex Day
7-13 billing days = 2 Free Flex Days
14-20 billing days = 4 Free Flex Days
21-27 billing days = 6 Free Flex Days
28+ billing days = 8 Free Flex Days

Free Flex Days discount

Each month, Reliant takes up to two days from each week when you used the most electricity and discounts your energy charge to zero.

The number of free flex days you will receive depends on the number of days in your billing cycle. The more days you are billed for each month, the more free days you will receive.

Reliant first counts full weeks, Sunday through Saturday, when giving Free Flex Days and then factors in partial weeks.

Important: This discount only applies to the energy charge on your bill.

The other part of your bill, including Transmission and Distribution (TDU) base and energy charges, are not discounted with the plan.

How much does Reliant Truly Free Flex Days cost?

At the time of writing, Reliant listed Truly Free Flex Days at 26.1 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Important: Reliant includes the discounts in the advertised 26.1 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

Your usage will vary, and nobody uses exactly 1000 kWh each month.

If you are considering signing up for Reliant Truly Free Flex Days, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage to see if you will benefit from the discount.

Average Texan

Are you similar to the average Texan? According to eia.gov, the average Texan paid 12.8 cents per kWh for electricity in 2021.

Remember that these average numbers are taken from statewide data and that your usage could be drastically different based on the size and age of your home, your appliances, and your electricity usage habits.

Truly Free Flex Days

Compared to the Texas average from last year, Reliant Truly Free Flex Days is more expensive at 26.1 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh usage.

At 1,132 kWh usage and assuming you get all eight Free Flex Days, you would be looking at an electricity bill for approximately $309.33 on the Truly Free Flex Days plan.

That’s 113% more than the average Texan paid on electricity bills last year.

Granted, that $309.33 bill assumes at least 32% of your monthly electricity usage is discounted.

Your electricity bill could be significantly more expensive than the Texas average if you signed up for Reliant Truly Free Flex Days, especially if your usage doesn’t match the free time discounts.

Other fees

Alongside your energy charge, you’ll find a TDU delivery charge on your bill.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in. The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

Reliant Truly Free Flex Days also has an early termination fee of $150 if you must end the plan before your contract expires.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, Reliant lists additional fees for returned payments, disconnection notices, disconnection recovery, and late payments.

If you regularly need to pay your bills late, you might consider a different electricity plan to avoid these fees.

Are you getting free electricity?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting free electricity with Reliant Truly Free Flex Days.

While Reliant does discount your energy charge to zero cents these days, unfortunately, you won’t be getting electricity for free.

TDU charges from Oncor are currently 3.89 cents per kWh, so you’ll see a charge for electricity on your bill. Oncor also charges $3.42 each month regardless of the electricity you use.

Regardless of Reliant’s discount, your utility will charge you for electricity.

Is the Gexa Energy Saver right for you?

If you’ve been shopping around for a new electricity plan, chances are you’ve seen Gexa’s Energy Saver plan advertised and are wondering if it would be right for your home.

The word free is always eye-catching, and the two free Emerson Sensi smart thermostats with Gexa Energy’s Energy Saver 24 plan, estimated at $550 in value, are no exception.

Who doesn’t like free stuff?

As a bonus, the Gexa Energy Saver 24 plan is powered by 100% green energy.

What to consider: Gexa Energy maintains the ability to adjust your smart thermostats during times of high energy demand. If you don’t like your electricity company changing the temperature of your home, you should steer clear of this plan.

Additionally, only single-family homeowners are eligible to receive free thermostats. Anyone living in an apartment or renting a home is out of luck.

If you dig into the true cost of the Energy Saver 24 plan, you’ll quickly see that free products won’t save you any money in the long run.

Almost every time you see free products advertised with an electricity plan, the cost is “baked-in” to the rate you’ll end up paying.

Retail electricity providers (REPs) are more than happy to offer up free stuff if it means they catch your eye and get you to sign up for an expensive electricity plan.

So is Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 plan right for you?

Unless you need two smart thermostats, you are better off enrolling in a different electricity plan.

You can quickly find the right plan for your home by entering your historical usage. It takes 5 minutes to find your best plan here with your usage.

What is the Gexa Energy Saver?

The Gexa Energy Saver plan is a simple, fixed-rate electricity plan that includes two free Emerson Sensi Touch WiFi smart thermostats.

Important: Only single-family homeowners are eligible to receive the Emerson Sensi smart thermostats. Apartments, multifamily, and other premises rented by the electricity customer are not eligible for this offer.

The plan is available for a 24-month term, features 100% green energy, and claims to save up to 23% on heating and cooling costs thanks to smart thermostats.

Gexa Energy calculates the savings by comparing operation time for a nationwide sample of Sensi users, with temperature adjustments averaging four degrees compared to users with no adjustments.

The Sensi thermostats allow for remote control of your home temperature, and Gexa Energy automatically adjusts the temperature of your home during times of high demand to help optimize your energy usage.

The plan also comes with Gexa Energy’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee, which allows you to switch to any other Gexa Energy plan without an early termination fee if you aren’t happy with the Energy Saver 24 plan.

New residential customers who sign up on Gexa’s site and use the promotional code also receive a $100 Visa Reward card.

Before buying into the advertising hype, enter your electricity usage, and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

The #1 most important thing to know is your home's energy usage.

This 2-minute video explains why shopping with your usage is so important👇

How does Gexa’s Energy Saver plan work?

The Energy Saver 24 plan is a simple, fixed-rate electricity plan from Gexa Energy that lets you lock in 100% green electricity for two years.

With the Energy Saver 24 plan, you get two free Emerson Sensi Touch WiFi smart thermostats and professional installation. Delivery and installation can take four to eight weeks, according to Gexa.

Gexa Energy maintains the ability to adjust your thermostat during times of peak energy demand to help you manage your energy usage. You can manually adjust your thermostat at any time.

With an average adjustment of four degrees, Gexa claims users can save up to 23% on heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

Charges breakdown

The Energy Saver 24 plan is advertised at 17.6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) at 1000 kWh usage for the Oncor service area.

On the Electricity Facts Label (EFL), Gexa Energy lists the energy charge at 13.37 cents per kWh.

The pricing structure is relatively straightforward, meaning the rate you pay for electricity gets cheaper as you use more electricity.

You’ll also see charges from the Transmission and Distribution (TDU).

The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

Other fees

The Energy Saver 24 plan has an early termination fee of $295.

In the Terms of Service, Gexa Energy lists additional fees for late payments, disconnection notices, suspensions or disconnections of service, reconnections, additional bill copies, and insufficient funds.

How much does Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 cost?

Gexa Energy currently advertises the Energy Saver 24 plan at 17.6 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area.

Important: The cost of the free thermostats and installation is factored into the price of the Energy Saver 24 plan. Gexa Energy has made sure that they are not losing money by including that cost in the electricity rate that you will pay.

Energy Saver 24

Compared to the Texas average, Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 plan is more expensive at 17.6 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

If you input 1,132 kWh of usage on ComparePower, the rate for electricity falls in line with the advertised price. Your estimated bill would be $198.81 per month if you used exactly 1,132 kWh of electricity throughout the year.

That’s almost 37% more than the average Texan paid last year on electricity bills.

On ComparePower, you can find plans that could save you up to $500 a year compared to Gexa Energy’s Energy Saver 24 plan. That almost completely covers the cost of the thermostats that you get for free with the Energy Saver 24 plan.

Remember, you need to shop with your usage to ensure you are not overpaying for electricity.

The “free” products offered from certain plans could cost you a significant amount of money, especially if you are locked into that plan for two years.

Is Gexa’s Energy Saver plan worth it?

The main selling point for the Energy Saver 24 plan is the two free Emerson Sensi smart thermostats you get delivered and installed. The thermostats and installation are estimated at a value up to $550.

Current pricing shows the Energy Saver 24 plan starting at 17.6 cents per kWh for 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area.

With a quick search on ComparePower, you can find other 100% green plans that start at 13.6 cents per kWh.

These plans could save you almost $500/year compared to the Energy Saver 24 plan. That’s upwards of $1,000 in savings throughout the length of the Energy Saver 24 contract.

Generally speaking, any electricity plan that offers free products has included the cost of those free products into your electricity rate. You end up paying more for electricity throughout the year, thinking you are getting something for free.

If you want free products, sign up for the Energy Saver 24 plan from Gexa Energy.

If you’d rather save yourself time and money, enter your zip code and find the right plan for your home in as little as five minutes right here on ComparePower.

TXU Energy Ultimate Summer Pass

The Ultimate Summer Pass is TXU’s latest energy offering in a long line of energy plans featuring free electricity.

If you’re reading this, you probably heard or saw an ad from TXU promoting its latest plan and are wondering if this plan is right for your home.

We’ll break down the details and provide tips and tools to help you make an informed energy decision for your household.

Is Ultimate Summer Pass right for your home?

We usually advise our readers against “free-time” electricity plans as they tend to cost more in the long run than standard fixed-rate plans.

However, with energy prices skyrocketing this summer, TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass might save you some money, particularly if you have a large home with high energy usage.

If you have a pool and multiple air conditioning units and like your home nice and cool, this plan is designed to help you save in the summer months.

TXU does offer a 60-day satisfaction guarantee for new customers. If you aren’t satisfied with the Ultimate Summer Pass plan, TXU lets you cancel or switch to another plan without a fee.

Discounts and free electricity could be a game-changer for you, but you need to shop with your home’s actual electricity usage to make sure the Ultimate Summer pass is a good choice for you.

This is because you want to take an entire year’s worth of electricity usage into consideration when choosing an energy plan for your home.

If you live in a smaller space that relies on electric heating in the winter, Ultimate Summer Pass could cost you significantly more throughout the year.

Compare Ultimate Summer Pass pricing with fixed-rate plans, so you know which plan will help you to save the most on electricity throughout the year.

Comparing energy plans and prices with your home’s unique historical usage profile is the best way to save on energy in Texas.

Before buying into the advertising hype, input your electricity usage on ComparePower, and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

The #1 most important thing to know is your home's energy usage.

This 2-minute video explains why shopping with your usage is so important👇

What is TXU Ultimate Summer Pass?

Ultimate Summer Pass is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. With time-of-use plans, you get a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

With Ultimate Summer Pass, TXU offers a 50% discount from June through September. Summer packs in the heat here in Texas, and most people see their highest electricity bills during these months.

The icing on the cake with the Ultimate Summer Pass comes from free electricity on the month’s three hottest days.

Feel free to crank up the air conditioning and keep yourself nice and comfortable inside without worrying about seeing a big bill at the end of the month.

How does TXU Ultimate Summer Pass work?

The Ultimate Summer Pass plan from TXU is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discounted electricity during certain times throughout the year.

Ultimate Summer Pass was created to give you discounts during the summer to keep your electricity bill lower during the months that traditionally see higher bills.

Summer discount

From June 1st at midnight until September 30th at 11:59 pm, TXU discounts your electricity.

Important: This discount only applies to the energy charge on your bill.

During the summer months, TXU cuts the energy charge portion of your bill from 21.1 cents per kWh in the Oncor area to around 10.5 cents per kWh.

The other parts of your bill, including the Base and Transmission and Distribution (TDU) charges, are not discounted with the plan.

Free hottest days

On top of the discount on your electricity charge, TXU also gives you free electricity on the three hottest days of each month.

These days are picked based upon the reports from local weather stations that TXU has picked out.

TXU looks at your usage to pick your free days if multiple days are at the same temperature.

Important: TXU discounts the energy charge to zero for the free days. TDU charges still apply.

Additional charges and fees

Alongside your energy charge, you’ll find a Base and TDU delivery charge on your bill.

TXU collects a base charge of $9.95 regardless of the monthly electricity you use.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in. The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

The Ultimate Summer Pass plan also has an early termination fee of $150 if you have to end the plan before your contract expires.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, TXU lists additional fees for agents assisting with payments, late payments, insufficient funds, document processing, disconnect notices sent, disconnect recoveries, and serial payments made during the month.

If you regularly need help with payments or pay your bill in small chunks, you might consider a different electricity plan to avoid these fees.

How much does Ultimate Summer Pass cost?

TXU currently lists the Ultimate Summer Pass at 22.5 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

TXU currently lists the Ultimate Summer Pass at 22.9 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage for Centerpoint, which includes the Houston metro service area.

Based on our calculations, the Ultimate Summer Pass gives you approximately an 18% discount throughout the year if you use the same amount of electricity each month.

Discount breakdown:
– June to September = 122 days
– 122 days – 12 free days = 110 days
– 110 days / 365 days ~ 15% of the year
– 12 free days / 365 days ~ 3% of the year
– 15% + 3% = 18% discount during the year

Important: TXU includes the discounts in the advertised 22.5 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

No one uses 1000 kWh every month, as in the example above. Your usage will change with the seasons.

If you are considering signing up for the Ultimate Summer Pass, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage on ComparePower to see if you will benefit from the discounts.

Ultimate Summer Pass

Compared to the Texas average, the Ultimate Summer Pass is more expensive at 22.5 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

If you input 1,132 kWh of usage on ComparePower, you’ll see that the Ultimate Summer Pass pricing drops slightly to 22.3 cents per kWh. However, your bill would still be $252.55 each month at that usage.

That’s almost 75% more than the average Texan paid last year on electricity bills.

Your electricity bill could be significantly more expensive than the Texas average if you signed up for TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass, especially if your usage doesn’t match the discounts.

Is the electricity actually free?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting the three hottest days each month free on TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass plan.

While TXU does discount your energy charge to zero cents these days, unfortunately, you won’t be getting electricity for free.

Regardless of TXU’s discount, your utility will charge you for electricity.

Oncor currently charges 3.89 cents per kWh, so you’ll still see a charge for electricity on your bill. Oncor also charges $3.42 each month regardless of the electricity you use.

Making matters even worse, TXU charges $9.95 monthly to use the Ultimate Summer Pass plan.

Even with the discounts from TXU, you’ll find TDU charges on your monthly bill for your electricity usage.

TXU Ultimate Summer Pass alternatives

How does TXU Energy Ultimate Summer Pass compare with similar free-time electricity plans?

In our opinion, TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass is your best option for a plan that includes some form of free electricity during the year.

With other Free Nights & Weekends energy plans, you must shift most of your electricity usage to the night or weekend to take advantage of the savings. This means a major lifestyle change for most people if they want to see an impact on their bills.

With Ultimate Summer Pass, you don’t have to change your lifestyle to take advantage of the discounts during the summer. No need to do your laundry or dishes after the sun goes down.

Power Wizard also offers limited-time access to plan recommendations for $14.95. The limited-access option gives you access to Power Wizard’s results, but they won’t sign you up for a new electricity contract.

The best part of Power Wizard is that it takes the burden of shopping for electricity off your shoulders. If you don’t have the time to shop for electricity plans, Power Wizard will do it for you.

At the one-time access level, Power Wizard sorts through electricity plans and then gives you a recommendation for what they think will work best for you.

You keep control over your accounts and choose whether you like their recommendations.

Jumping up to the VIP Member level, Power Wizard does everything for you. They’ll shop around, recommend a plan, and enroll you in it once you give them permission.

Once you are in a plan, they’ll watch the market and let you know if there are better deals out there that you might want to check out.

Power Wizard makes a new plan recommendation at the tail end of your contract and helps you through the switching process.

And Power Wizard is a little bit cheaper than its competitors. Their words, not ours.

Cons of Power Wizard

The downside to Power Wizard is that everything you are paying for, all the plan information and comparisons, you can do yourself with publicly available information.

Everything that Power Wizard uses to compare plans for you is publicly listed on Power to Choose.

You’re also paying for a year of service at the VIP Member level when you’ll likely end up with a year-long contract. You pay for 12 months of service, and Power Wizard only works once per year.

You have the potential to be on shorter contracts, and Power Wizard might find you a better deal in the middle of your contract worth switching to, but there’s no guarantee that is what will happen.

You could pay for a year of “continual monitoring” of the electricity market, only to have nothing happen the rest of the year.

At ComparePower, we give you all-inclusive pricing, so you don’t have to worry about REPs taking advantage of you.

If you want to do things yourself, you can have the same or even better savings in as little as 10 minutes.

Power Wizard Service: What you are paying for?

Power Wizard’s two different membership levels give drastically different experiences. With the one-time access plan, you are paying for a recommended plan without any of the VIP membership services.

You get the provider and plan details, plus 14-day access to the recommendation. Then you can decide how you want to continue.

In short, you pay Power Wizard to shop for you and tell you what to buy. The most significant benefit to short-term access is that Power Wizard compares the plans for you.

You can see your options in one place alongside Power Wizard’s recommendations, and you can check up on their work.

The VIP program gives you a concierge shopping service on top of a plan recommendation.

Power Wizard shops through all your plan options, but they up the ante with total account management to handle your enrollment with a provider.

Once you sign off on a plan, they handle the paperwork for you and get your home or rental powered up.

Power Wizard continues to check in on the market and look for better deals. As electricity rates change, you might see a recommendation for a new plan.

Anytime a switch recommendation is sent your way, Power Wizard does a cost analysis to make sure paying any early termination fees is in your best interest.

If you haven’t switched at the end of your contract, Power Wizard will shop again to find you the best deal and let you know when to pick a new plan.

Power Wizard Alternatives

Power to Choose

Behind door number one is Power to Choose

You see a long list of electricity plans and no tools to help you sort through any plan details.

Providers have three rates for each of their plans that seem like they are a good deal, and some of the plans even come with discounts or free devices.

Before you know it, you’ve searched through a dozen different plans and think that you have found a good deal. The sad part is that Power to Choose never considered your actual electricity usage throughout the whole process.

All those plans you thought were a good deal had hidden gimmicks and pricing structures meant to suck you in and take as much of your money as possible.

You end up with an electricity plan that costs way more than you were expecting, and your monthly bills are a slap in the face.

Energy Ogre

Door number two is home to Energy Ogre.

Energy Ogre tells you to throw the shopping process away and pay for their service instead.

Using its algorithm to analyze your electricity usage, Energy Ogre finds the cheapest plan for your home, so you don’t have to shop.

You don’t lift a finger, and your lights are on.

ComparePower

We think you should choose door number three and use ComparePower instead.

Factor in your home’s actual usage, compare plan details head-to-head, and know exactly what you’ll pay each month on any plan.

No hidden fees. No gimmicks. And it’s entirely free.

You end up with the best electricity plan for your home or rental and the confidence to shop for plans anytime.

Power Wizard customer reviews

Power Wizard maintains an A rating by the Better Business Bureau, but it is not an accredited business. The three reviews listed give the company a 2.33 out of 5-star rating.

On Trustpilot, Power Wizard averages 4.7 stars, with 5-star reviews making up 86% of the company’s ratings.

Reviewers praise the company for good customer service and great savings on their electricity bills.

On the other hand, the negative reviews call out the company for high bills and poor customer service.

Facebook and Google reviews are similar to Trustpilot, with reviews averaging 4.5 to 5 stars.

Most complaints come down to difficulty contacting Power Wizard and increased rates when a new plan starts.

A few even claim the company made plan changes without their permission and signed them up for two different plans.

Is Power Wizard right for you?

If you are someone who could care less about maintaining control over your accounts or don’t have the time to shop for electricity, Power Wizard could be a good choice for you.

The two tiers of pricing allow you to decide whether you want the full concierge service or if a plan recommendation fits the bill.

If you’re considering using Power Wizard, you might pay for one-time access and see if you’re saving money with the recommendation.

In the future, you can always sign up for the more expensive annual plan and let Power Wizard run the show for you.

If you’re hesitant about signing up for Power Wizard, we don’t blame you. You have access to all the information Power Wizard uses to make its recommendations.

Take a few minutes to enter your zip code and compare plans on ComparePower. You’ll find great deals on plans to suit any home size, and we’ll bet that you are more than capable of finding the right plan for your home.

ComparePower Texas

Very helpful, Compare Power makes switching providers stress-free.
“I plugged in my kWh usage from this past year & I could’ve been saving tons of money if I would have utilized this site & switched sooner!”

Moving to a new city is stressful, but shopping for an electric company was not!
Moving to a new city is stressful, but shopping for an electric company was not! It took less than 5 minutes to enter my info, compare quotes, and start service. I really like that you could search for renewable energy sources of electricity; it was my first time realizing that green energy was an option in my new area, and I feel good about opting for renewable rather than coal-generated electricity.
