Reliant Truly Free Weekends

Reliant Truly Free Weekends is part of a trio of free electricity plans that Reliant launched to target different times of the week.

If you’re reading this, you probably heard or saw an ad from Reliant Energy promoting its latest plan and wondering if it is right for your home.

We did a deep dive into the details and have some tips to help you make an informed energy decision for your household.

Is Reliant Energy Truly Free Weekends right for me?

In most cases, we steer our readers clear of “free-time” electricity plans because they usually cost more yearly than standard fixed-rate plans.

But with electricity prices at high levels, Reliant Truly Free Weekends might save you some money if you can take advantage of the free time.

If you do laundry on the weekends and don’t use much electricity during the week, this plan is designed to help you cut your electricity costs.

Important: Reliant includes the free weekend usage discount in the advertised rate for this plan. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage and MUST shift at least 32% of your usage to the weekend to get the advertised rate.

Reliant Truly Free Weekends could cost you significantly more throughout the year if you cannot shift at least a third of your usage to the weekends.

Free electricity could be a game changer for you, but you need to shop with your home’s electricity usage to make sure you pick the right plan for your home.

Before buying into the advertising hype, input your electricity usage here on ComparePower, and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

Compare Reliant Truly Free Weekends pricing with fixed-rate plans, so you know which will help you save the most on electricity throughout the year.

The number one rule in finding the right power plan is to understand your usage.

What is the Reliant Truly Free Weekends plan?

Reliant Truly Free Weekends is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. With time-of-use plans, you get a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

Reliant powers this plan with 100% renewable solar energy. Your usage is offset by renewable energy credits (RECs) that Reliant purchases.

With Truly Free Weekends, Reliant offers free electricity on the weekends. You can use as much electricity as you want, without worrying about a high electric bill at the end of the month.

Crank up your air conditioning and settle into bingeing that series you’ve been saving up.

How does Reliant Truly Free Weekends work?

Reliant Truly Free Weekends is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discounted electricity during certain times throughout the year.

It was created to give you free electricity on the weekend to keep your electricity bills in control throughout the year.

Weekend discount

From 8 pm on Friday until 12 am on Monday, Reliant discounts your electricity.

Important: This discount only applies to the energy charge on your bill.

The plan does not discount the other part of your bill, including Transmission and Distribution (TDU) base and energy charges.

How much does Reliant Truly Free Weekends cost?

At the time of writing, Reliant listed Truly Free Weekends at 26.1 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

Important: Reliant includes the discounts in the advertised 26.1 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

No one uses 1000 kWh every month, and your usage will vary, affecting the rate you pay.

If you are considering signing up for Reliant Truly Free Weekends, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage to see if you will benefit from the discount.

Average Texan

Are you similar to the average Texan? According to eia.gov, the average Texan paid 12.8 cents per kWh for electricity in 2021.

With average usage of 1,132 kWh per month, the average Texas electricity bill would be right around $144.90 each month.

With the weather in Texas swinging each season, your usage and electricity bill can change as quickly as the weather.

Remember that these average numbers are taken from statewide data and that your usage could be drastically different based on the size and age of your home, your appliances, and your electricity usage habits.

Truly Free Weekends

Compared to the Texas average from last year, Reliant Truly Free Weekends is more expensive at 26.1 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh usage.

At 1,132 kWh usage, you would be looking at an electricity bill for approximately $309.33 on the Truly Free Weekends plan.

That’s 113% more than the average Texan paid on electricity bills last year.

Granted, that $309.33 bill assumes that you shift at least 32% of your monthly electricity usage to the weekend.

Your electricity bill could be significantly more expensive than the Texas average if you signed up for Reliant Truly Free Weekends, especially if your usage doesn’t match the free time discounts.

Other fees

You’ll find a TDU delivery charge alongside your energy charge on your bill.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in. The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

Reliant Truly Free Weekends also has an early termination fee of $150 if you end the plan before your contract expires.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, Reliant lists additional fees for returned payments, disconnection notices, disconnection recovery, and late payments.

If you regularly need to pay your bills late, you might consider a different electricity plan to avoid these fees.

Are you getting free electricity?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting the weekends free with Reliant Truly Free Weekends.

While Reliant does discount your energy charge to zero cents these days, unfortunately, you won’t be getting electricity for free.

TDU charges from Oncor are currently 3.89 cents per kWh, so you’ll see a charge for electricity on your bill. Oncor also charges $3.42 each month regardless of the electricity you use.

Regardless of Reliant’s discount, your utility will charge you for electricity.

Is the Gexa Energy Saver right for you?

If you’ve been shopping around for a new electricity plan, chances are you’ve seen Gexa’s Energy Saver plan advertised and are wondering if it would be right for your home.

The word free is always eye-catching, and the two free Emerson Sensi smart thermostats with Gexa Energy’s Energy Saver 24 plan, estimated at $550 in value, are no exception.

Who doesn’t like free stuff?

As a bonus, the Gexa Energy Saver 24 plan is powered by 100% green energy.

What to consider: Gexa Energy can adjust your smart thermostats during high energy demand. If you don’t like your electricity company changing your home’s temperature, you should steer clear of this plan.

Additionally, only single-family homeowners are eligible to receive free thermostats. Anyone living in an apartment or renting a home is out of luck.

If you dig into the actual cost of the Energy Saver 24 plan, you’ll quickly see that free products won’t save you any money in the long run.

Almost every time you see free products advertised with an electricity plan, the cost is “baked-in” to the rate you’ll end up paying.

Retail electricity providers (REPs) are more than happy to offer up free stuff if it means they catch your eye and get you to sign up for an expensive electricity plan.

So is Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 plan right for you?

Unless you need two smart thermostats, you are better off enrolling in a different electricity plan.

You can quickly find the right plan for your home by entering your historical usage. It takes 5 minutes to find your best plan here with your usage.

What is the Gexa Energy Saver?

The Gexa Energy Saver plan is a simple, fixed-rate electricity plan that includes two free Emerson Sensi Touch WiFi smart thermostats.

Important: Only single-family homeowners can receive the Emerson Sensi smart thermostats. Apartments, multifamily, and other premises rented by the electricity customer are not eligible for this offer.

The plan is available for a 24-month term, features 100% green energy, and claims to save up to 23% on heating and cooling costs thanks to smart thermostats.

Gexa Energy calculates the savings by comparing operation time for a nationwide sample of Sensi users, with temperature adjustments averaging four degrees compared to users with no adjustments.

The Sensi thermostats allow for remote control of your home temperature, and Gexa Energy automatically adjusts your home’s temperature during times of high demand to help optimize your energy usage.

The plan also comes with Gexa Energy’s 60-day Happiness Guarantee, which allows you to switch to any other Gexa Energy plan without an early termination fee if you aren’t happy with the Energy Saver 24 plan.

New residential customers who sign up on Gexa’s site and use the promotional code also receive a $100 Visa Reward card.

Before buying into the advertising hype, enter your electricity usage, and we’ll show you a detailed pricing breakdown for every plan.

The number one rule in finding the right power plan is to understand your usage.

This 2-minute video that explains everything you need to know ⤵️

How does Gexa’s Energy Saver plan work?

The Energy Saver 24 plan is a simple, fixed-rate electricity plan from Gexa Energy that lets you lock in 100% green electricity for two years.

With the Energy Saver 24 plan, you get two free Emerson Sensi Touch WiFi smart thermostats and professional installation. Delivery and installation can take four to eight weeks, according to Gexa.

Gexa Energy maintains the ability to adjust your thermostat during times of peak energy demand to help you manage your energy usage. You can manually adjust your thermostat at any time.

With an average adjustment of four degrees, Gexa claims users can save up to 23% on heating and cooling costs throughout the year.

Charges breakdown

The Energy Saver 24 plan is advertised at 17.6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) at 1000 kWh usage for the Oncor service area.

On the Electricity Facts Label (EFL), Gexa Energy lists the energy charge at 13.37 cents per kWh.

The pricing structure is relatively straightforward, meaning the rate you pay for electricity gets cheaper as you use more electricity.

You’ll also see charges from the Transmission and Distribution (TDU).

The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

Other fees

The Energy Saver 24 plan has an early termination fee of $295.

In the Terms of Service, Gexa Energy lists additional fees for late payments, disconnection notices, suspensions or disconnections of service, reconnections, additional bill copies, and insufficient funds.

How much does Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 cost?

Gexa Energy currently advertises the Energy Saver 24 plan at 17.6 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area.

Important: The cost of the free thermostats and installation is factored into the price of the Energy Saver 24 plan. Gexa Energy has ensured that they are not losing money by including that cost in the electricity rate you will pay.

Energy Saver 24

Compared to the Texas average, Gexa’s Energy Saver 24 plan is more expensive at 17.6 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

If you input 1,132 kWh of usage on ComparePower, the rate for electricity falls in line with the advertised price. Your estimated bill would be $198.81 per month if you used precisely 1,132 kWh of electricity throughout the year.

That’s almost 37% more than the average Texan paid last year on electricity bills.

On ComparePower, you can find plans that could save you up to $500 a year compared to Gexa Energy’s Energy Saver 24 plan. That almost completely covers the cost of the thermostats that you get for free with the Energy Saver 24 plan.

Remember, you need to shop with your usage to ensure you are not overpaying for electricity.

The “free” products offered from certain plans could cost you significant money, especially if you are locked into that plan for two years.

Is Gexa’s Energy Saver plan worth it?

The main selling point for the Energy Saver 24 plan is the two free Emerson Sensi smart thermostats you get delivered and installed. The thermostats and installation are estimated at up to $550.

Current pricing shows the Energy Saver 24 plan starting at 17.6 cents per kWh for 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area.

With a quick search on ComparePower, you can find other 100% green plans that start at 13.6 cents per kWh.

These plans could save you almost $500/year compared to the Energy Saver 24 plan. That’s upwards of $1,000 in savings throughout the Energy Saver 24 contract.

Generally speaking, any electricity plan that offers free products has included the cost of those free products in your electricity rate. You end up paying more for electricity throughout the year, thinking you are getting something for free.

If you want free products, sign up for the Energy Saver 24 plan from Gexa Energy.

If you’d rather save time and money, enter your zip code and find the right plan for your home in as little as five minutes here on ComparePower.

What is TXU Ultimate Summer Pass?

Ultimate Summer Pass is also known as a “time-of-use” plan. With time-of-use plans, you get a discount, or even free electricity, during certain times of the day or year.

These discounts can stack up to actual savings, but only if you can shift your usage to the times when you are getting a discount.

With Ultimate Summer Pass, TXU offers a 50% discount from June through September. Summer packs in the heat here in Texas, and most people see their highest electricity bills during these months.

The icing on the cake with the Ultimate Summer Pass comes from free electricity on the month’s three hottest days.

Feel free to crank up the air conditioning and keep yourself nice and comfortable inside without worrying about seeing a big bill at the end of the month.

How does TXU Ultimate Summer Pass work?

The Ultimate Summer Pass plan from TXU is a time-of-use plan, meaning you get discounted electricity during certain times throughout the year.

Ultimate Summer Pass was created to give you discounts during the summer to keep your electricity bill lower during the months that traditionally see higher bills.

Summer discount

From June 1st at midnight until September 30th at 11:59 pm, TXU discounts your electricity.

Important: This discount only applies to the energy charge on your bill.

During the summer months, TXU cuts the energy charge portion of your bill from 21.1 cents per kWh in the Oncor area to around 10.5 cents per kWh.

The other parts of your bill, including the Base and Transmission and Distribution (TDU) charges, are not discounted with the plan.

Free hottest days

On top of the discount on your electricity charge, TXU also gives you free electricity on the three hottest days of each month.

These days are picked based on the reports from local weather stations that TXU has picked out.

TXU looks at your usage to pick your free days if multiple days are at the same temperature.

Important: TXU discounts the energy charge to zero for the free days. TDU charges still apply.

Additional charges and fees

You’ll find a Base and TDU delivery charge alongside your energy charge on your bill.

TXU collects a base charge of $9.95 regardless of your monthly electricity usage.

The TDU charge depends on which company services the area that you live in. The TDU charge for the Oncor area, covering the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, is currently 3.89 cents per kWh. Oncor also collects a base charge of $3.42 each month.

The Ultimate Summer Pass plan also has an early termination fee of $150 if you have to end the plan before your contract expires.

Before signing up, make sure you shop with your home’s unique usage profile to avoid high bills and the need to end your contract early.

Digging into the Terms of Service, TXU lists additional fees for agents assisting with payments, late payments, insufficient funds, document processing, disconnect notices sent, disconnect recoveries, and serial payments made during the month.

If you regularly need help with payments or pay your bill in small chunks, you might consider a different electricity plan to avoid these fees.

How much does Ultimate Summer Pass cost?

TXU currently lists the Ultimate Summer Pass at 22.5 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage in the Oncor service area, which includes the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

TXU currently lists the Ultimate Summer Pass at 22.9 cents per kWh at 1000 kWh monthly usage for Centerpoint, which includes the Houston metro service area.

Based on our calculations, the Ultimate Summer Pass gives you approximately an 18% discount throughout the year if you use the same amount of electricity each month.

Discount breakdown:
– June to September = 122 days
– 122 days – 12 free days = 110 days
– 110 days / 365 days ~ 15% of the year
– 12 free days / 365 days ~ 3% of the year
– 15% + 3% = 18% discount during the year

Important: TXU includes the discounts in the advertised 22.5 cents per kWh price for the Oncor area. You will NOT see an additional discount on your electricity usage.

No one uses 1000 kWh every month, as in the example above. Your usage will change with the seasons.

If you are considering signing up for the Ultimate Summer Pass, make sure you shop with your home’s actual usage on ComparePower to see if you will benefit from the discounts.

Ultimate Summer Pass

Compared to the Texas average, the Ultimate Summer Pass is more expensive at 22.5 cents per kWh advertised at 1000 kWh usage.

If you input 1,132 kWh of usage on ComparePower, you’ll see that the Ultimate Summer Pass pricing drops slightly to 22.3 cents per kWh. However, your bill would still be $252.55 each month at that usage.

That’s almost 75% more than the average Texan paid last year on electricity bills.

Your electricity bill could be significantly more expensive than the Texas average if you signed up for TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass, especially if your usage doesn’t match the discounts.

Is the electricity actually free?

You might wonder if there is any catch for getting the three hottest days each month free on TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass plan.

While TXU does discount your energy charge to zero cents these days, unfortunately, you won’t be getting electricity for free.

Regardless of TXU’s discount, your utility will charge you for electricity.

Oncor currently charges 3.89 cents per kWh, so you’ll still see a charge for electricity on your bill. Oncor also charges $3.42 each month regardless of the electricity you use.

Making matters even worse, TXU charges $9.95 monthly to use the Ultimate Summer Pass plan.

Even with the discounts from TXU, you’ll find TDU charges on your monthly bill for your electricity usage.

TXU Ultimate Summer Pass alternatives

How does TXU Energy Ultimate Summer Pass compare with similar free-time electricity plans?

In our opinion, TXU’s Ultimate Summer Pass is your best option for a plan that includes some form of free electricity during the year.

With other Free Nights & Weekends energy plans, you must shift most of your electricity usage to the night or weekend to take advantage of the savings. This means a significant lifestyle change for most people if they want to see an impact on their bills.

With Ultimate Summer Pass, you don’t have to change your lifestyle to take advantage of the discounts during the summer. No need to do your laundry or dishes after the sun goes down.

They use your past electricity bills or access your current accounts to create a usage profile for your home that they then input into an algorithm.

Both companies’ algorithms use your usage to find what they believe is the cheapest electricity plan for your home. Once the algorithm spits out a result, you’ll be signed up for that plan.

ComparePower gives you free tools to do exactly what you pay Power Wizard and Energy Ogre to do.

Power Wizard also offers limited-time access to plan recommendations for $14.95. The limited-access option gives you access to Power Wizard’s results, but they won’t sign you up for a new electricity contract.

In comparison, Energy Ogre costs $10 a month, or you can pay $120 upfront for a full year of service.

Once you sign up, Energy Ogre will find you an electricity plan and sign you up for what they believe to be the cheapest for your home.

The other difference is that NextEra Energy, the nation’s largest utility corporation, owns Power Wizard, which also owns Frontier Utilities and Gexa Energy.

Energy Ogre was founded by Jesson Bradshaw, who got his start in the energy business through gas and power marketing.

Is Power Wizard or Energy Ogre Worth It?

If you don’t mind handing over control of your electricity contracts and spending money for someone to shop for you, Power Wizard or Energy Ogre could be a good choice for you.

Power Wizard

Power Wizard charges you $10 a month, or $14.95 for 60-day access to their electricity plan recommendations, using the same information you’ll find on the state-run electricity choice website power to choose for free.

Instead of paying for publicly available information, spend 10 minutes shopping with your home’s unique usage profile to find the best plan for your home right here on ComparePower and skip past high electricity bills.

Power Wizard in the Spotlight

Founded by a team of energy professionals, Power Wizard uses proprietary data science and algorithms to shop for electricity plans as a concierge-like service.

You may have heard of Power Wizard after the company found itself in hot water, thanks to a Houston Chronicle article that shed light on the owners of Power Wizard.

Power Wizard is owned by NextEra Energy, the nation’s largest utility corporation, which also owns Frontier Utilities and Gexa Energy.

The company had previously claimed it had no affiliation with retail electric providers (REPs), and the Houston Chronicle was happy to call them out.

Is Power Wizard Worth It?

If you’re wondering if Power Wizard is worth your money, you should ask yourself a simple question.

Do you want to pay for something you could do yourself in 10 minutes?

In all honesty, Power Wizard could be a good fit for you if you don’t have the time to shop around for plans and want someone to do the work for you.

You’ll get reminders whenever you need to make a new electricity plan choice, and Power Wizard will handle the enrollment paperwork to go along with it.

Your savings will depend on how much you are currently paying for electricity. You won’t notice much difference if you’re already getting a good deal.

Paying way too much for electricity on your current plan?

The savings you’ll see from Power Wizard could blow you away.

Remember that all the information that Power Wizard uses to make its recommendations is free and available to you anytime. So you can easily compare plans with the same information yourself.

If you want to save yourself money, either that one-time payment or a subscription each year, shop on ComparePower and see how much you can save in 10 minutes.

We’ll show you all-inclusive pricing that fits your home’s unique usage profile, and you can check electricity shopping off your to-do list without paying someone $89 a year to shop for you.

Pros of Power Wizard

Power Wizard takes the burden of shopping for electricity off your hands. If you don’t have the time to shop for electricity plans, Power Wizard will do it for you.

At the one-time access level, Power Wizard sorts through electricity plans and then gives you a recommendation for what they think will work best for you.

You keep control over your accounts and choose whether you like their recommendations.

Jumping up to the VIP Member level, Power Wizard does everything for you. They’ll shop around, recommend a plan, and enroll you once you permit them.

Once you are in a plan, they’ll watch the market and let you know if there are better deals out there that you might want to check out.

Power Wizard recommends a new plan at the tail end of your contract and helps you through the switching process.

And Power Wizard is a little bit cheaper than its competitors. Their words, not ours.

Cons of Power Wizard

The downside to Power Wizard is that you can do everything you are paying for, all the plan information and comparisons, with publicly available information.

Everything that Power Wizard uses to compare plans for you is publicly listed on Power to Choose.

You’re also paying for a year of service at the VIP Member level when you’ll likely end up with a year-long contract. You pay for 12 months of service, and Power Wizard only works once per year.

You have the potential to be on shorter contracts, and Power Wizard might find you a better deal in the middle of your contract worth switching to, but there’s no guarantee that is what will happen.

You could pay for a year of “continual monitoring” of the electricity market, only to have nothing happen the rest of the year.

At ComparePower, we give you all-inclusive pricing, so you don’t have to worry about REPs taking advantage of you.

If you want to do things yourself, you can have the same or even better savings in as little as 10 minutes.

Power Wizard Service: What Are You Paying For?

Power Wizard’s two different membership levels give drastically different experiences. With the one-time access plan, you are paying for a recommended one without any VIP membership services.

You get the provider and plan details, plus 60-day access to the recommendation. Then, you can decide how you want to continue.

In short, you pay Power Wizard to shop for you and tell you what to buy. The most significant benefit to short-term access is that Power Wizard compares your plans.

You can see your options in one place alongside Power Wizard’s recommendations, and you can check up on their work.

The VIP program gives you a concierge shopping service on top of a plan recommendation.

Power Wizard shops through all your plan options, but they up the ante with total account management to handle your enrollment with a provider.

Once you sign off on a plan, they handle the paperwork for you and get your home or rental powered up.

Power Wizard continues to check in on the market and look for better deals. As electricity rates change, you might see a recommendation for a new plan.

Anytime a switch recommendation is sent your way, Power Wizard does a cost analysis to ensure paying early termination fees is in your best interest.

If you haven’t switched at the end of your contract, Power Wizard will shop again to find you the best deal and let you know when to pick a new plan.

Power Wizard Alternatives

Power to Choose

Behind door, number one is Power to Choose

You see a long list of electricity plans and no tools to help you sort through any plan details.

Providers have three rates for each of their plans that seem like a good deal, and some of the plans even come with discounts or free devices.

Before you know it, you’ve searched through a dozen different plans and thought you had found a good deal. The sad part is that Power to Choose never considered your electricity usage throughout the process.

All those plans you thought were a good deal had hidden gimmicks and pricing structures meant to suck you in and take as much of your money as possible.

You end up with an electricity plan that costs way more than you were expecting, and your monthly bills are a slap in the face.

Energy Ogre

Door number two is home to Energy Ogre.

Energy Ogre tells you to throw the shopping process away and pay for their service instead.

Using its algorithm to analyze your electricity usage, Energy Ogre finds the cheapest plan for your home so you don’t have to shop.

You don’t lift a finger, and your lights are on.

Curious? Check out our Energy Ogre overview to learn everything you need to know about Energy Ogre.

ComparePower

We think you should choose door number three and use ComparePower instead.

Factor in your home’s actual usage, compare plan details head-to-head and know exactly what you’ll pay each month on any plan.

No hidden fees. No gimmicks. And it’s entirely free.

You have the best electricity plan for your home or rental and the confidence to shop for plans anytime.

Power Wizard Customer Reviews

Power Wizard maintains an A rating from the Better Business Bureau, but it is not an accredited business. The three reviews listed give the company a 2.33 out of 5-star rating at the time of writing.

On Trustpilot, Power Wizard averages 4.7 stars, with 5-star reviews making up 86% of the company’s ratings.

Reviewers praise the company for good customer service and great savings on their electricity bills.

On the other hand, the negative reviews call out the company for high bills and poor customer service.

Facebook and Google reviews are similar to Trustpilot, with reviews averaging 4.5 to 5 stars.

Most complaints come down to difficulty contacting Power Wizard and increased rates when a new plan starts.

A few claim the company made plan changes without their permission and signed them up for two different plans.

Is Power Wizard Right For You?

If you are someone who could care less about maintaining control over your accounts or don’t have the time to shop for electricity, Power Wizard could be a good choice for you.

The two pricing tiers allow you to decide whether you want the full concierge service or if a plan recommendation fits the bill.

If you’re considering using Power Wizard, you might pay for one-time access and see if you’re saving money with the recommendation.

In the future, you can always sign up for the more expensive annual plan and let Power Wizard run the show.

We don’t blame you if you’re hesitant about signing up for Power Wizard. You can access all the information Power Wizard uses to make its recommendations.

Take a few minutes to enter your zip code and compare plans on ComparePower. You’ll find great deals on plans to suit any home size, and we’ll bet that you can find the right plan for your home.

Energy Ogre Review

Energy Ogre charges you $120 for something you could do yourself in 10 minutes or less on ComparePower with your usage history.

How does that sound?

The alternative to paying Energy Ogre $120 is spending ten minutes shopping with YOUR home’s usage on ComparePower, saving time and money.

The Good, the Bad, and the Green

Did you know that ogres are like onions?

They make people cry, and they have layers.

Shrek jokes aside, the deregulated energy market here in Texas is like an onion.

Retail electricity providers (REPs) hide what you’ll pay for electricity under complicated pricing structures and hidden fees.

They use the government-sponsored site Power to Choose to game the electricity marketplace and try to sucker you into paying high rates.

In 2013, Energy Ogre swooped into the world of electricity to save poor consumers from electricity companies.

They believe removing you from the equation of shopping for electricity Energy Ogre will help you avoid falling into any traps set by REPs.

How Does Energy Ogre Work?

Energy Ogre is a subscription service that handles all aspects of the electricity shopping experience.

For $10 a month or $120 a year, Energy Ogre will shop through the thousands of electricity plans available to save you money.

Energy Ogre uses your latest bill or accesses your electricity account with your current provider to create a usage profile for your home.

Their electricity shopping algorithms then work to find a better electricity plan by removing you from the electricity shopping equation.

But you can do everything Energy Ogre does without paying for it.

Compare energy plans and electricity rates with your home’s electricity usage profile to find your best rate in Texas.

Shop with your usage on ComparePower to find your best energy plan and save yourself $120.

Is Energy Ogre Worth It?

Ask yourself a few questions to determine if you want to spend $120 yearly for Energy Ogre’s service.

If you honestly don’t have 10 minutes a year to shop for electricity, then Energy Ogre could be a good option.

It will handle electricity shopping on your behalf, and you can go about your life without worrying about missing the end of your contract.

Everything that Energy Ogre does, you can do yourself for free.

Compare your options and check out with the right plan for your home in as little as 10 minutes on ComparePower.

Straightforward, all-inclusive pricing lets you know exactly what you pay for before checkout.

Pros of Energy Ogre

There are a few clear-cut benefits to using a service like Energy Ogre.

Energy Ogre’s idea is to make electricity shopping as simple and convenient as possible.

They handle the whole process from start to finish and can set up autopay on your account so you don’t miss a bill.

And finally, Energy Ogre acts as the liaison between you and the electricity company.

Their customer service department is available to help you with any questions or complaints so that you don’t have to talk to the providers.

Cons of Energy Ogre

You can find most of the plans Energy Ogre offers by yourself and shop without paying a dime.

At the same time, you are paying Energy Ogre for service throughout the entire year when, in reality, they could sign you up for a 12-month contract.

You pay all year; they work once but keep making money off you.

Lastly, by signing up for Energy Ogre, you are giving control of your electricity to another company.

When you sign up for Energy Ogre’s service, you let them sign contracts in your name and change your electricity plan.

You might never know what you are signed up for, and Energy Ogre can change your accounts anytime.

Energy Ogre’s Process

With your usage profile, Energy Ogre uses their algorithm to shop through all the available plans on the market. You can also see all of this information yourself on Power to Choose.

Energy Ogre estimates their onboarding process will take around two to three business days if you switch to a new provider. Throughout the process, they keep you up to date with emails.

Energy Ogre handles enrollment once they’ve found the cheapest plan for your house or apartment. They automatically enroll you in the best plan they can find and open an account in your name.

Suppose you are already in an electricity contract. In that case, Energy Ogre will shop through plans and provide a recommendation that you can use to determine if your savings justify paying an early termination fee.

You can snooze their recommendation if you decide paying any fees isn’t worth it at the time.

At the end of any contract, Energy Ogre starts the process and goes back to shopping to find you a new plan.

What Are You Paying for With Energy Ogre?

With Energy Ogre, you pay for a full concierge service that handles all aspects of the electricity shopping process.

There are four main things you are paying for with Energy Ogre’s service. First and most apparent, Energy Ogre is doing the shopping work.

They take your usage and compare your options across the electricity marketplace using their algorithm. This algorithm is what finds you the cheapest rate for electricity in an attempt to save you money.

If you are already on the right plan for your home, Energy Ogre cannot find you a better rate or save you money.

You can enter your most recent electricity bill information into Energy Ogre’s savings calculator to see if they can save you money before signing up.

Next, and this is the most significant thing you are paying for, Energy Ogre monitors the electricity market to see if your current plan is still the best deal.

Their algorithm is constantly running to check and see if energy prices have changed enough to find you a better deal for electricity.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that Energy Ogre will find a better plan for your home during your current contract.

Energy Ogre also navigates all the paperwork surrounding electricity contracts. So when your contract ends, they’ll check over any renewal offers and automatically switch you to a new plan.

The fourth and final part of Energy Ogre’s service is that they act as customer service to help resolve any issues you may have. So, instead of reaching out to your provider, complain to Energy Ogre, and they’ll help resolve the issue.

Energy Ogre Alternatives

Power Wizard

Power Wizard is a direct competitor to Energy Ogre.

With Power Wizard, you get the same concierge shopping service as Energy Ogre, but it also allows you to pay for one-time access to their results instead of signing up for the entire year.

Power to Choose

Power to Choose is an online marketplace where REPs can advertise plans without restriction.

Plan details, including energy and delivery rates, are all detailed in an electricity facts label (EFL) which is only required to show three usage points at 500, 1000, and 2000 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

Curious about EFLs? Learn how to read an EFL.

The problem is that almost nobody ever uses that amount of electricity, and the EFL doesn’t tell you that electricity can cost way more if you use 501 kWh during the month.

Over the years, REPs have complicated their rate structures to game Power to Choose into showing their plans at the top of the list, making finding the right plan for your home even more challenging.

In the end, most people leave Power to Choose frustrated without any clear idea of what they will pay on their electric bill.

ComparePower

ComparePower is the best Energy Ogre alternative, and it’s free to you, the one paying for all this.

We’re here to help Texans beat electricity companies at their own game and find the right plan for their homes.

Simply shop with your home’s unique usage profile to find the best plan for your home in as little as 10 minutes.

Energy Ogre Reviews

Across the web, Energy Ogre maintains numerous testimonials about how much money people have saved with their service.

The Better Business Bureau notes that Energy Ogre is an accredited business, but it does not give the company a rating. Customer reviews give the company a 3.22-star rating, and six complaints have been closed in the last three years.

Facebook shines a more flattering light on the company, with users dishing out an average of 4.1 stars out of five.

On the negative side, reviews for the company call out issues with its customer service team. Reviewers claim they waited on the phone for hours and that their emails didn’t receive responses for months.

Is Energy Ogre Right For You?

So should you shell out $120 yearly to have Energy Ogre handle everything?

It depends on the type of person you are and whether or not you are willing to put in 10 minutes of effort to shop for yourself.

If you don’t care about handing over control to a company that may or may not find you a good deal on electricity, go ahead and sign up for Energy Ogre.

They will handle as much of the process as possible, and you won’t have to lift a finger once you hand over your information.

Are you more of a do-it-yourself type?

Electricity shopping is quick and easy when you use ComparePower.

Shop with your usage, see all-inclusive pricing and find the best plan for your home in as little as 10 minutes.

What are the benefits of fixed-rate electricity plans in Texas?

For Texans tired of volatile electricity bills, fixed-rate plans offer a simple solution – stability. By locking in a set rate for your contract term, you can say goodbye to unpredictable monthly costs and scream-worthy rate hikes.

No more budgeting headaches or bracing for sky-high summer bills. Just consistent, level payments you can plan around.

At its core, a fixed-rate electricity plan is elegant in its simplicity. You pay a locked rate per kWh of usage for the duration of your contract, whether six months, one year, two years, or more. Your rate doesn’t fluctuate with market conditions, utility fuel costs, or seasons.

Does it sound too good to be true? While fixed rates don’t protect you from changes in your usage patterns, they eliminate the chaos of rate volatility.

That stable per-kWh price provides a firm foundation for manageable bills. Just monitor your electricity consumption, and you’ll know roughly what to budget each month.

When you lock in a fixed electricity rate, you put yourself in the driver’s seat and leave uncertainty in the rearview mirror.

But consistent budgeting is just the start of fixed-rate benefits:

  • Pricing Protection—As wholesale electricity prices fluctuate based on demand, supply costs, and market events, your fixed rate keeps your bill predictable. There are no sudden spikes to swallow.
  • Flexible Terms—Whether you prefer a short 6-month lock, want to settle in for 24 months, or something in between, fixed-rate options let you choose the contract length that best suits you.
  • Renewable Options Who says fixed rates can’t be green? Many providers offer 100% renewable fixed-rate plans utilizing solar, wind, and other clean sources.
  • Plan Variety From flat-rate to time-of-use, prepaid to indexed, there’s a fixed-rate plan type to meet almost any need. No compromising for stabilized pricing.
  • Potential Savings—Locking in when rates are low lets you keep paying a discounted rate as prices potentially rise over your contract. It’s the best of both worlds.

Fixed-rate plans in Texas typically allow you to lock in rates for 6, 12, or 24 months, with some providers offering even longer terms.

In our age of infinite choice, fixed-rate electricity makes life simpler. You get price transparency, predictable bills, and the ability to choose your household’s right plan. All without sacrificing flexibility or green energy options.

Are fixed-rate electricity plans always the cheapest option in Texas?

Here’s the reality—in any given month, some Texans may find lower rates on variable plans that float with the market. And there is no guarantee locking in today’s fixed rate will pay off long-term if wholesale prices tumble.

However, those savings often come with a “certainty tax” – the risk that rates will spike in future months, catching those on variable plans off-guard with a sudden rate hike. Fixed-rate customers can shrug off market fluctuations, knowing their rate is locked.

We always strive to show Texans all their options so they can make an educated choice. Our rate comparison tools let you weigh the best fixed and variable plans based on your home’s historical usage.

That way, you can opt for stabilized pricing or ride the market variability – whichever aligns with your tolerance for rate inconsistency.

If you’re currently on a variable-rate plan, you can usually switch to a fixed-rate plan when your current contract expires or by paying an early termination fee.

The bottom line is that fixed-rate plans offer a premium many Texans are willing to pay: complete peace of mind in exchange for steady, hassle-free bills.

That’s an invaluable benefit when money’s tight, or you don’t want another worry in our fast-paced world.

Fixed-Rate Electricity FAQs

Do you have questions about finding the best fixed-rate electricity plans? We’ve got you covered.

How do fixed-rate electricity plans work in Texas?

Fixed-rate plans in Texas lock in a set rate per kWh for the duration of your contract. This means your electricity rate remains the same regardless of market fluctuations, providing predictable bills based on your usage.

How long can you lock in a fixed-rate electricity plan in Texas?

Most providers offer fixed-rate plans for 6, 12, or 24 months. Some may offer shorter or longer terms, but these are the most common contract lengths.

What should I consider before choosing a fixed-rate electricity plan in Texas?

Consider your usage patterns, the length of time you plan to stay at your current address, the provider’s reputation, and any additional fees or charges. Also, compare rates across multiple providers to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

Will Texas electricity rates go down in 2024?

While it’s challenging to predict with certainty, some experts suggest rates may stabilize or slightly decrease due to increased renewable energy production. However, many factors can influence electricity rates, so it’s wise to lock in a competitive rate when you find one.

Can I switch from a variable-rate to a fixed-rate electricity plan in Texas?

Yes, you can typically switch to a fixed-rate plan when your current contract expires. If you’re in the middle of a contract, you may need to pay an early termination fee to switch. Check with your current provider for specific terms.

If you’re reading this, your electricity provider in Texas likely went out of business, and you are now with another provider known as a Provider of Last Resort or POLR.

Here is what you need to know to make an informed energy decision for your household.

POLR transitions usually default to variable market rates, also called holdover rates.

Your Provider of Last Resort could honor your previous rate with your former electric company, but that is not guaranteed. Check the details of your new contract to find out exactly what you are paying.

In most cases, you are paying the Provider of Last Resort an expensive holdover rate.

Holdover rates are subject to changes in market conditions and are significantly higher than those for a fixed-rate contract.

Switch providers on ComparePower to a fixed-rate plan that will be easier to budget and cheaper than a holdover rate.

Get a fixed-rate contract with a low rate in minutes.

What is a Provider of Last Resort, or POLR?

POLR service, or Provider of Last Resort, is a safety net for you when your preferred retail electric provider (REP) cannot maintain service.

Instead of utilities providing backup electric service to customers, the POLR structure requires competitive REPs to fill the service gap if any REP exits the market.

This temporary service should be used only in exceptional circumstances, such as when a REP goes out of business.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) appoints certified REPs to provide POLR service in each service region every two years.

Large REPs must participate as POLRs, and smaller providers may volunteer.

Find a low rate and switch energy providers instantly.

What are my options if my electric provider goes out of business?

Getting dumped to a POLR is not ideal. There’s no getting around that, but you can now find a great new rate for your home.

You do not have to stay with your provider of last resort. You can choose your provider on ComparePower.

Shop with your usage, compare pricing for your home, and checkout with the right plan in as little as five minutes.

We’ll show you all-inclusive pricing, so you know exactly what your bills will look like.

Find plans that match your needs and avoid all the gimmicks that providers throw at you.

Will my power go out?

There is no interruption of power during a POLR transition. If you are in good standing, which means you’ve paid your electricity bills on time, your utility company will continue to deliver power to your home.

When do you get POLR electric service?

Retail energy is a high-risk commodity business, and REPs must purchase electricity ahead of time to support electricity demand.

If a REP has not purchased enough electricity to serve their customers, they are forced to purchase real-time electricity to meet their customer’s needs.

And if the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) views the upcoming market prices as risky, they may demand more collateral from your REP to cover the costs.

If your REP cannot cover the costs of real-time electricity or put up enough collateral, they can quickly go out of business, and you’ll be placed on a POLR plan.

This is precisely what happened after Winter Storm Uri when demand skyrocketed, and real-time electricity prices hit all-time highs.

Who is your Provider of Last Resort?

The PUCT determines the Texas POLR list and updates it every two years.

The largest providers are required to serve as a POLR, and smaller providers may choose to take part to share the burden.

Current POLR providers are listed below by delivery area:

– Oncor: TXU Energy
– Centerpoint: Reliant Energy
– TNMP: TXU Energy
– AEP: TXU Energy

How does POLR electric service work?

If you end up on a POLR plan, don’t worry. The POLR system was implemented to keep your lights on so you won’t be stuck in the dark.

The first thing that will happen is that you’ll be notified that your electricity service has been transferred to a POLR.

You’ll receive a notice from the PUCT letting you know that your REP is no longer servicing your home, and soon your POLR will send information about the plan you are being placed on.

Your contract with your former REP will be terminated, and your contract details will likely not be carried over.

Any payment or billing arrangements on your old electricity plans, such as average billing or Auto Pay, are also terminated.

The new POLR plan you are placed on will be month-to-month with no contract and will have a variable rate.

This means that the cost of your electricity will change each month and can be extremely expensive.

If you are hearing warning bells going off, you are right to assume that you don’t want to stay on a POLR plan for long.

The good news is that you can shop for a new electricity plan without any penalties.

When you’re transferred to a POLR, you have 15 days to switch to another plan with that POLR, or you can shop to find the best rate for your home.

Don’t wait. Switch providers here in as little as 5 minutes and enjoy savings on your energy bill month after month.

Search for a low electricity rate and enroll online in minutes.

Moving to a new apartment in Texas?

You’re probably wondering how to get an electricity account so you can get your keys.

Well, you’re in the right place! This article will guide you through the process of setting up your electricity in a breeze.

And the best part? You’ll learn how to get the best rates using ComparePower.

TL;DR: To get an electricity account for your apartment, enter your zip code, compare plans, and checkout in as little as 10 minutes with proof of service. With ComparePower, you can easily compare rates and choose the best plan for your needs.

How to Get an Electricity Account

Step 1: Understand the Texas Electricity Market

Texas has a deregulated electricity market, which means you have the freedom to choose your electricity plan.

But with so many options, it can be overwhelming. That’s where ComparePower comes in.

We make it easy for you to compare electricity plans from different providers based on your location and usage.

Step 2: Determine Your Electricity Needs

Before you choose an electricity plan, you need to understand your electricity needs.

How big is your apartment? How many people will be living there? Do you have energy-efficient appliances?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help you choose a plan that fits your needs and budget.

If you’re unsure what your electricity usage will look like, try out our kWh calculator to get an estimate.

Step 3: Choose Your Electricity Plan

Once you’ve determined your needs, it’s time to choose a plan.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to do it alone.

ComparePower helps you to compare rates, contract terms, and different providers with transparent, all-inclusive pricing.

We’ve done the hard work for you, so all you have to do is choose.

Step 4: Checkout With Your Plan

After choosing a provider, it’s time to checkout.

You’ll need to provide some personal information, such as your name, address, and Social Security number.

You’ll also need to specify a start date for your service.

Step 5: Pay the Deposit (If Required)

Some electricity providers may require a deposit, especially if you don’t have a credit history.

But don’t worry, ComparePower will show you all of your deposit options if one is required.

And the good news? Your deposit will be refunded or credited to your account after a certain period of on-time payments.

Step 6: Check Your Email

You’ll have a confirmation email from ComparePower within minutes of finishing checkout and a confirmation from the electricity company shortly after.

Electricity companies can take up to several hours to process orders, so it may take some time for their confirmation email to show up.

Once you have your confirmation emails, you should be all set to get your keys from your leasing agent.

Shopping Considerations

Before you start comparing providers and plans, it’s important to consider the following:

  • Know Your Needs: Have a clear understanding of your electricity needs. Consider factors like your average electricity usage, peak usage times, and whether you’d prefer a fixed vs. variable rate plan.
  • Look Beyond the Rate: While the rate is an important factor, it’s not the only thing to consider. Be sure to look at the contract length, early termination fees, and any special features or incentives. Remember, the cheapest plan may not always be the best fit for your needs.
  • Consider Renewable Energy: Texas is a leader in renewable energy, particularly wind power. Many electricity providers offer plans that include a percentage of renewable energy. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, ComparePower can help you find a green energy plan that fits your needs.

If you haven’t settled on an apartment yet, you might want to consider looking for an apartment on the first floor of the building.

First-floor apartments tend to maintain temperatures better than those on higher floors. This means it will stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Heating and cooling significantly impact your electricity usage each month, and finding an apartment that regulates the temperature can save you hundreds of dollars each year.

You can also look for apartments with energy-efficient appliances already installed. These appliances are designed to avoid excessive electricity usage and won’t use electricity while not in use.

Setting up electricity in your Texas apartment doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

With ComparePower, you can do it quickly, easily, and affordably. Compare plans today and get the best rates for your electricity needs.
