Electricity Price Trends in Van
Electricity in Van, Texas, is deregulated. As a resident, you have a choice when it comes to choosing a retail electricity provider (your energy company), which gives you insight and command over your energy bill.
Deregulation of energy in the state de-monopolized the electricity market for the majority of Texas, the city of Van included, which introduced lots of competition.
As a result, many fantastic power providers compete for your business in Van by offering low-prices, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your electricity statement.
As many as 65+ energy companies compete for your business in Van and there are hundreds of plans to choose from.

How to find the best energy plan in Van
#1 rule: Usage is king!
Discovering the amount of energy you will use month-to-month is the best way to shop for power in Van. Why is this important?
The rate you see power providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 1000 kWh).
Every plan has a different calculation for how your monthly statement is computed, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much energy you consume in each month.
Unless you use exactly the advertised amount each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you ordered.
Thankfully, there’s a better way to shop for electricity provider.
Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the best rate for your home.
Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to determine the right energy rate plan for your home.
ComparePower does all this math for you instantly. What takes hours inside a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.
We put the power in your hands, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigate you step-by-step to the energy rate plan that’s best for your household’s usage.
We clarify the details, disclosing all fees and charges, so you’ll know exactly where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.
We then assist you in signing-up with your selected electricity company without ever having to leave our website.
The take away here is you should know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best electricity plan for your home.
If you don’t know your usage, estimate
If you recently purchased a home or business, or you cannot obtain 12-months of usage history, you can always estimate the average amount of energy that you will use in any given month.
While not as optimal as having all previous 12-months of usage, estimating your average usage is better than blindly picking the first plan you see advertised by an energy company at a specific usage that isn’t what you’ll consume.
Use ComparePower to shop for the best electricity plan for your specific usage.
Moving to Van: Setting up Electricity
If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Van, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12-months of energy usage for your new home.
Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12-months of usage.
This information is readily found in recent billing statements.
It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12-months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.
Once you have historical usage, ComparePower will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.
Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.
By signing up for a plan through ComparePower you will receive automated reminders when it’s time to renew your existing plan or to possibly switch plans.
Switching electricity companies in Van
Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is important to shop for a lower price every year when your contract is close to expiring.
Your existing electricity company will normally raise your energy rate once your term expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up.
Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing electricity companies.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your energy bill.
Switching is easy:
-
-
- You don’t have to call your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your electricity supply
- It takes just minutes
-
When you make the switch, your new energy provider will take care of everything for you including terminating service with your previous company.
There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in Van is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can choose any date up to 14 days early of your current contract’s end date without an “early cancellation” fee. That’s Texas Law.
If you’re still under contract, check how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.
The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.
For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.
If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly best price.
You will want to gather your past usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
