Electricity in The Woodlands, Texas, has been deregulated. As an energy customer, you have a choice when it comes to picking a retail electricity provider (your electricity provider), which gives you insight and command over your energy bill.
Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for the majority of Texas, the city of The Woodlands included, which introduced massive competition.
As a result, many fantastic power providers compete for your business in The Woodlands by offering low-rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your energy statement.

How to find the best energy plan in The Woodlands
#1 rule: Usage is key!
Knowing the amount of energy you will use each month is the best way to shop for electricity in The Woodlands. Why is this important?
The “price per kWh” you see power companies advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).
Every plan has a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will be determined by how much power you consume in each month.
Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than the one you saw advertised when you ordered.
Fortunately, there’s a better way to choose your electricity provider.
Calculating your total monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly cost, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.
Better still, if you have an entire year of usage history for your household, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to determine the ideal energy plan for your home.
ComparePower does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now solved in just seconds.
We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of investigation, spreadsheets, and calculations across hundreds of offers and navigate you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your household’s usage.
We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges and fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to expect on your bill.
We then assist you in enrolling with your selected power provider without ever having to leave our service.
The bottom line is you should know your expected or historical usage before choosing the best energy plan for your home.
If you don’t know your usage, estimate
If you are unable to acquire 12-months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.
Although knowing the previous 12-months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.
Use ComparePower to find the best electricity plan for your specific usage.
Moving to The Woodlands: Setting up Electricity
If this is your first time setting up electricity service in The Woodlands, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12-months of energy usage for your new home.
Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12-months of usage.
This information is readily found in recent billing statements.
It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12-months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.
Once you have historical usage, ComparePower will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.
Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.
Sign-up for a plan instantly through ComparePower. We will remind you when its time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan length you decide on.
Switching electricity companies in The Woodlands
Switching is good. Market conditions are always in flux, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is about to expire.
Your existing energy company will normally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you do not take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly more than the plan you signed up.
Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing electricity companies.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your energy bill.
Switching is easy:
-
-
- You don’t have to contact your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your electricity supply
- It takes just minutes
-
When you make the switch, your new energy company will handle everything for you including canceling service with your previous company.
There is no loss of power when you switch. Electricity in The Woodlands is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can pick any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early termination” penalty. Texas law protects you here.
If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.
And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings achieved on your monthly bill by switching companies may outweigh the fee to break your existing contract.
If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill and one of our team members will get back to you promptly with your best options.
If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that understanding your usage is the best way to find the truly best price.
You will want to find your historical usage for the last 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your household.
