Most Texans, including those residing in Midland, are part of the deregulated energy market. By de-monopolizing, this market, Texas introduced competition.
Because of this infusion of competition, many top-notch retail electricity companies vie for your business by offering low prices. Now is an excellent time to shop, switch, and pay less on your monthly power bill.

How to find the best energy plan in Midland
#1 rule: Know Your Usage!
The best piece of information you can have when shopping for power is your month-by-month usage for the past year. But why?
The “price per kWh” electricity companies advertise is for a precise monthly usage, typically 2000 kWh.
Each plan has a different method for how your bill is calculated, and your monthly bill will fluctuate depending on how much power you use in a given month.
Unless you match the exact advertised usage in a month, you will pay an effective “price per kWh” different than the one quoted in advertising.
Lucky for you, there’s a better way to shop for electricity.
Figuring your total monthly bill based on your anticipated monthly usage (or even better, for the whole year based 12 months of actual usage) and comparing competing plans is the most effective way to shop for the lowest energy rate.
ComparePower does this for you instantly.
Rather than spending hours researching different plans, ComparePower walks you through the process of choosing the best energy plan for your home.
As you proceed through the steps, you’ll see clearly all the fees, charges, and fine print so you know precisely how you will spend your money.
After that, you sign up with your selected electricity supplier without navigating away from the ComparePower website. Armed with your usage history and the facts about all the available electricity plans, you will feel confident in your plan choice.
If you don’t know your usage, take a guess
Maybe you bought a brand new home or can’t get in touch with the previous homeowner. If you cannot get 12 months of your historical usage, your next best course of action is to estimate how much electricity you will use in an average month.
Again, this is not as good as having all previous 12 months, but estimating your average usage is preferable to blindly choosing the first plan you see.
Use ComparePower to find the best energy plan for your typical usage.
Moving to Midland: Setting up Electricity
Midland got its start as a railway station built in 1881 as a halfway point between Dallas and El Paso. Herman N. Garrett, the area’s first permanent resident, came in 1882 with his herd of sheep. A post office was established in 1884. Midland County was formed in 1885, and Midland was designated as the county seat at that time.
The weather in Midland is milder than most other places in Texas; however, rain falls only a day or two each month. Most days are windy.
Midland College is a four-year public university offering undergraduate degrees. The University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa 16 miles away offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Midland is home to The Petroleum Museum, I-20 Wildlife Preserve, George W. Bush Childhood Home, Museum of the Southwest, and Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Important: If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Midland, you need to get the previous 12 months of energy usage for your new home to get the best rate.
The previous homeowner should be able to provide electricity usage history. Most of the time, all you need to do is ask. The homeowner can give you previous billing statements. Making the effort to obtain the usage history can save you a lot of money.
ComparePower will run the numbers to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.
Note: If you can’t obtain usage history, you can estimate it instead. Use the “Help Me Choose” tool when you enter your zip code below, and ComparePower will help you evaluate your home’s usage.
Sign-up for an electricity plan instantly. Plus, you will receive reminders when it’s time to re-evaluate your plan and possibly switch to save money.
Switching electricity companies in Midland
Switching electricity providers is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is best to shop for a lower price before your contract expires
Usually, your existing electricity company will raise your electricity rate once your contract expires.
Before renewing your contract, check the prices of competing electricity providers.
Merely switching providers can end up saving you hundreds or perhaps thousands of dollars each year on your power bill.
Switching is easy:
- You don’t have to notify your current company to cancel (no “break-up call”)
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your power supply
- Switching takes just a few minutes
When you switch, your new electricity company will take care of everything for you including canceling service with your previous company.
There is no interruption in service when you switch. Electricity in Midland is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
Because the wires and poles that deliver electricity to your home do not change when you switch electricity providers, your service is not impacted when you switch retail providers.
Under Texas law, you can switch any date within 14 days before your contract expiration without an “early termination penalty.”
If you’re still under contract, determine how many months remain on your contract. Most companies allow you to set a future start date up to 60 days in advance.
And even if you’re well inside your contract, savings with a new provider could be greater than an early termination fee.
If you are unsure email us your latest energy bill, and someone from our team will reply to you promptly with your best options.
If you’re ready to switch and want to know how to find the best plan, remember that understanding your historical usage is the best way to find the truly best rate.
Pull together your usage for the past 12 months to determine the best plan with the lowest rate for your home.
