Electricity Price Trends in Columbus
Energy in Columbus, Texas, has been deregulated. As a resident, you have a choice when it comes to choosing a retail electricity provider (your energy provider), which gives you flexibility and power over your energy bills.
Deregulation of electricity in Texas de-monopolized the energy market for the majority of Texas, the city of Columbus included, which introduced lots of competition.
As a result, many excellent power companies compete for your business in Columbus by offering low-rates, making it a great time to compare, switch, and lower costs on your electricity statement.
As many as 60-100 providers compete for your account in Columbus and there are hundreds of plans to select from.
Average Electricity Rates in Columbus, Texas

How to find the best energy plan in Columbus
#1 rule: Usage is key!
Knowing the amount of electricity you will use monthly is the ideal way to find a deal on energy in Columbus. Why does this matter?
The rate you see electricity providers advertising is for an exact monthly usage (typically 2000 kWh).
Every plan uses a different equation for how your monthly statement is determined, and your monthly bill will change according to how much electricity you use in the month.
Unless you match the exact advertised usage each month, you will end up paying an effective “price per kWh” different than what you saw when you enrolled.
Fortunately, there’s a better way to select your electricity rate.
Calculating your expected monthly bill based on expected monthly usage, then comparing options by total monthly bill, is the best way to shop for the lowest rate for you.
Even better, if you have 12 months of usage history for your home, you can compare plans by total annual cost. This annualized method takes into account the changes in usage between summer and winter months and is the absolute best way to discover the perfect electricity rate plan for your home.
ComparePower does all the complicated math for you instantly. What takes hours on a spreadsheet is now done in a few seconds.
We put you in the driver’s seat, taking what would amount to hours of research, spreadsheets, and computations across hundreds of plans and navigate you step-by-step to the electricity plan that’s best for your home’s consumption.
We clarify the details, disclosing the various charges and fees, so you’ll know precisely where your money is going and what to anticipate on your bill.
We then assist you in ordering your plan with your chosen energy company without ever having to leave our service.
The bottom line is you should understand your expected or historical usage before picking the best energy plan for your home.
If you don’t know your usage, estimate
If you are unable to acquire 12-months of historical usage, or you’re the owner of a brand new home, the next best thing is to estimate how much energy you will use in an average month.
Although knowing the previous 12-months of usage is optimum, it is far better to estimate the average energy consumption than to select the first electricity provider that you see advertised. After all, you have no idea how much energy you will use at that point.
Use ComparePower to shop for the best energy plan for your specific usage.
Moving to Columbus: Setting up Electricity
If this is your first time setting up electricity service in Columbus, to get the best rate you need to get the previous 12-months of energy usage for your new home.
Ask the previous home-owner to provide you with their past 12-months of usage.
This information is readily found in recent billing statements.
It may take some effort to acquire usage for the past 12-months, but the time (and savings) will be well worth it.
Once you have historical usage, ComparePower will do the math instantly to help you find the best plan for your home’s usage pattern.
Note: If you are unable to obtain historical usage information, a second option would be to estimate your future usage via utilizing our “Help Me Choose” tool. By simply entering your zip code the tool will be able to assess your home’s projected electricity consumption.
Sign-up for a plan instantly through ComparePower. We will remind you when its time to return to switch and save at the end of the plan term you decide on.
Switching electricity companies in Columbus
Switching is good. Market conditions are always changing, so it is essential to shop for a lower price each year when your contract is about to expire.
Your existing electricity company will normally raise your electricity rate once your contract expires. If you fail to take action, you’ll be left on a month-to-month rate that is significantly higher than the plan you signed up.
Before renewing your contract make sure to check the rates of competing energy companies.
Switching can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year on your energy bill.
Switching is easy:
-
-
- You don’t have to call your current provider to cancel (no “break-up call”)
- No one comes to your home
- There is no disruption in your power supply
- It takes just minutes
-
When you decide to switch, your new energy company will take care of everything for you including terminating service with your previous provider.
Your lights stay on when you switch. Electricity in Columbus is all delivered by the Oncor Transmission and Distribution Utility.
The wires and poles that deliver power to your home do not change when you switch electricity companies. Therefore the reliability of your service is not affected.
You can choose any date within 14 days of your contract expiration date without an “early termination” fee. Texas law protects you here.
If you’re still under contract, find out how many months remain on your contract. You can set a future start date with most companies up to 6o days in advance.
The amount saved each month by switching to a different electricity company may outweigh the one-time fee to get out of your contract early.
For help with this, you can send us your latest energy bill via email, and one of our professional team members will contact you shortly to discuss your best options.
If you’re ready to switch and would like to know how to find the best plan remember that knowing your usage is the best way to find the truly cheapest price.
Keep in mind that when you get ready to switch, and you want to know the most efficient way to find the right plan at the best rate, it is essential that you first understand your usage. To accomplish that, you will need to collect the usage history for the past 12 months.
